8 Tips to Organizing for Your Next Big Move

Ah, the beast that is moving...it seems like no matter how hard you might work to prepare, you always end up throwing things into whatever container you can find just to get it out of the way (especially if the moving truck will be there in t-minus 5 minutes).

If this applies to you, you’re not alone! We’re here to help you prepare for your next big move in a simple, tangible way. The process of packing up your life can be incredibly difficult regardless of whether you’re headed down the street or across the country, but you can take that stress out of the equation with these quick tips.

Organized to Move

  1. Declutter Your Home Before Packing | If you know you’ll be moving far in advance, use the time leading up to your move to start weeding out items that you don’t want to take with you. You’ll be so thankful that you cut down on the clutter beforehand! If your move is more last minute, keep bins handy for items that you may want to donate or trash as you pack. The less baggage the better, right?!

  2. Create a Packing Supplies Station | This may seem like an obvious one, but designate a location for your moving supplies! Sort your boxes into small, medium, and large sizes and keep your bubble wrap, packing tape, marker for labeling, and all other supplies in one area of the room you’re working on. When you’re done with those supplies, return them to the same spot! You’d be surprised by how much time you can save when you’re not digging through the chaos just so you can label your box and keep working.

  3. Color Code with Sticky Notes |  You can assign a color to each room of your home or each category of contents and tape it to your boxes, and then label them so that it’s easy for you to spot where each box needs to go when you get from Point A to Point B. Be sure to place the sticky note in an easily visible spot!

  4. Use Items You Already Have Around the House to Protect Your Belongings |  Have a collection of wine glasses like yours truly? Wrap them in your t-shirts or socks to insulate them for the trip! That antique vase that’s been passed down to you? Cover that beauty in one of your thickest blankets! Not only does this save you money on packing supplies and help the environment, you’re knocking out two birds with one stone every time you use this method!

  5. Don’t Make Things More Difficult Than They Need to Be |  If you can wrap your silverware tray in Saran Wrap to keep everything in place instead of emptying the contents into a box one by one, why not?! You can also use empty space in larger furniture items to move pillows or blankets since they won’t add much weight to already-heavy items but they do need the space that all of those empty drawers can provide.

Organized to Sell Your Home

If you're simultaneously preparing for a move and getting your home ready to sell, have no fear...we have tips for that, too!
6. Purge and Organize Your Closets, Cabinets, and Hiding Spaces | Focus on the areas of your home that buyers pay the most attention to. The kitchen, living room, master bedroom, and bathrooms are all ticket items for ensuring that your home sells quickly, so put more of your energy towards making those areas look organized and spacious! We all know buyers are peeking in your pantry, closets, and cabinets to size up the space.

7. Clear the Clutter in Your Home |  The easiest way to make your home look more spacious is to clear out your clutter. As you're cleaning and preparing to list your home, get a jump start by packing up some of your nonessential items. You can always store moving boxes in a storage area, basement, or space in your home that isn't a focal selling point. Buyers understand that you're preparing to move and might be excited to see you're already preparing for a new buyer! If storing moving boxes in your home isn't an ideal situation, consider renting a storage unit (or ask a family member or friend with some extra space on their hands) for the time being.

8. Design a Blank Canvas for Your Buyers | Help buyers envision themselves in your home more easily by transforming your spaces into a blank canvas. Remove personal items like photos and keepsakes, keep surfaces clear, and stage your furniture in a way that will help those viewing your home to easily picture how they can make the space their own. Removing these items is another way to get ahead on packing, too!

We hope these tips + tricks help you get ready to conquer your next big move! Transitioning to a new space should be exciting and refreshing, and it all starts with a well organized moving process.
